The BMW iX4 electric SUV was unveiled on 8 October 2026 as another model in the company’s Neue Klasse range. BMW describes a March 2027 launch with two initial variants and a higher-performance version to follow. For prospective buyers, the important distinction is between announced laboratory or provisional figures and the experience a car will deliver on their own roads.

What BMW’s announcement confirms

The official BMW iX4 release identifies the iX4 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive as the initial versions. It describes sixth-generation eDrive technology, an 800V system and DC charging of up to 400kW.

For the 50 xDrive, BMW quotes a usable battery capacity of 108.7kWh and range of up to 828 kilometres under the stated test conditions. A 612hp M60 xDrive is announced to follow, with figures identified as provisional where noted.

The release’s equipment and consumption information refer to the German market and may vary elsewhere. This guide does not confirm an Indian launch date, local price or identical standard equipment in India.

Read the range figure in context

A maximum quoted range is not a promise for every trip. Load, route, temperature, speed and energy used by other systems can influence the distance a driver obtains.

Compare figures produced under the same test method when assessing two vehicles. Mixing a laboratory maximum with another car’s road-test result makes the comparison less useful.

For your own planning, think about the journeys you repeat most often and where charging is available. A vehicle’s suitability depends on how comfortably it fits those journeys, not only the largest number in an announcement.

Peak charging is only one part of a stop

An announced maximum charging rate describes a capability under suitable conditions. It does not establish that every charger can supply it or that the car will sustain the peak throughout a session.

Look for charging information that includes the starting and ending state of charge, conditions and time taken. That gives more practical context than a peak number alone.

Also consider the infrastructure you can use regularly. Reliable charging at a convenient location may matter more to your routine than occasional access to a very high-power station far from your normal route.

Compare the variants by your needs

Start with how many people and how much luggage you normally carry, where the vehicle will be parked and what kind of driving you do. Then assess which variant provides the features and performance you would use.

A higher-output model may be appealing, but it should not be the automatic choice if your priorities are comfort, running cost or a particular range of equipment.

Check the local specification when a market opens orders. A global announcement can describe options that are unavailable or packaged differently in another country.

Cabin and software checks

BMW describes a new digital operating environment, but a display’s size does not tell you everything about usability. In a future demonstration, check the functions you need often and how clearly the car presents essential information.

Assess seating, visibility and controls from your own driving position. Include other regular users in the decision where possible, especially if their needs differ from yours.

This guide does not provide a hands-on comfort verdict, tested acceleration or measured charging result. Those require actual testing of a specified production vehicle.

What to watch before buying

Look for confirmed local availability, final specifications, warranty terms and independent tests of the production model. Obtain a current quotation rather than converting a foreign price into an assumed Indian figure.

The iX4 announcement establishes an upcoming electric SUV with new architecture and substantial manufacturer-stated capabilities. Our BMW Maps 3D view guide explains a related software development and why eligibility still needs to be checked for the exact car and market.

Keep discovering.
