CBSE Class 12 marks bifurcation 2027 needs a subject-by-subject reading. Physics, Chemistry and Biology have a different allocation from Mathematics, and a 20-mark project in Commerce or Humanities should not be relabelled as a practical examination.

The board’s 6 November 2026 examination circular listing identifies the subject-wise marks table for the 2026–27 session. The Class XII section of the official CBSE PDF separates theory, practical, project and internal assessment, alongside paper duration and examination arrangements.

Science and mathematics: check the assessment column

Subject code Theory marks Remaining component Theory duration
Physics 042 70 30 practical 3 hours
Chemistry 043 70 30 practical 3 hours
Biology 044 70 30 practical 3 hours
Computer Science 083 70 30 practical 3 hours
Informatics Practices 065 70 30 practical 3 hours
Mathematics 041 80 20 internal assessment 3 hours
Applied Mathematics 241 80 20 internal assessment 3 hours

These are selected subjects, not the complete senior-secondary catalogue. The distinction between Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is worth preserving even though their displayed totals match. The same principle applies to Computer Science and Informatics Practices: equal assessment weights do not make their course requirements identical.

Commerce and humanities: projects are separately listed

Subject Theory Other component
Accountancy 055 / Business Studies 054 80 20 project
Economics 030 80 20 project
History 027 / Political Science 028 80 20 project
Sociology 039 80 20 project
Geography 029 / Psychology 037 70 30 practical
English Core 301 80 20 internal assessment

The listed theory papers in this second table have a three-hour duration. Read the project or practical heading exactly as printed. Calling every non-theory component “internal marks” can hide the preparation you need to discuss with your school, especially when different subjects are managed by different teachers.

Build a subject record before a stream-wide plan

Begin with your registered subjects rather than an internet list labelled “Science” or “Commerce.” Students can have combinations that do not fit a standard stream chart. Write each subject code beside its name and copy the relevant components into one page you can revisit with your teachers.

For each practical subject, ask what you must have ready for the assessment and when your school expects it. Keep that information alongside the marks table, but label it as a school instruction. This avoids confusing the board’s maximum-mark allocation with a local submission date or laboratory appointment.

For project subjects, make a status note covering the work completed, the feedback received and the next action. A project worth 20 marks needs attention without displacing all written-paper preparation. Schedule a specific session for unresolved work instead of repeatedly postponing it until after the next theory test.

Use the duration for realistic written practice

A timed full-paper attempt can reveal whether you spend too long on an early answer. Review where time was lost and whether you left questions unanswered. The official maximum marks are a useful frame for this exercise, while the question paper and marking guidance determine what a complete answer needs.

Do not turn the marks split into an assumption about easy marks. A 70+30 subject is still a 100-mark subject with two forms of assessment. Preparation should cover both, and the marks earned depend on the applicable assessment process rather than the mere existence of a practical notebook.

Keep dates and allocation in separate places

This circular is an allocation document. Check the examination date sheet for written-paper dates and use your school’s notices for practical, project or assessment arrangements. If two messages disagree, take the official subject row and the specific school notice to the subject teacher rather than guessing which screenshot is newer.

Finally, keep the full PDF available, not just the rows reproduced here. The official document includes other languages, arts and skill subjects with their own patterns. Check the session heading, confirm your code and look for subsequent CBSE notices before treating any shared chart as the final instruction for your own examination.
